UPDATE: Classes have been cancelled for Tuesday, January 7th. All readings for that day will be rescheduled.
Golden Apple Foundation with the help of the Dorothy J Swanson Foundation, Andy’s Books for Kids, and additional support by Try Beta Club Inc. will again be sponsoring “I Know I Can”- a college aspiration program for 3rd grade children. Since 2007, Golden Apple Foundation has been serving third graders in the Rockford Public Schools. New this year, thanks to the generosity of the Dorothy J Swanson Foundation, “I Know I Can” will engage third graders in the Belvidere and North Boone school districts as well.
The program will visit Rockford Public School classrooms January 7 through January 10, 2014 and will visit North Boone and Belvidere 3rd graders the January 13 through January 16, 2014. If you are interested in reading in a 3rd grade classroom for one class period you can register and select your schedule online at iknowican2014.eventbrite.com.
Volunteers read I Know I Can, a children’s book which speaks to young students about forming and achieving goals in the classroom. The book spurs dialogue with children about their future and gives them strategies for continuing their education. Volunteers will wear their own college-logo shirts, will share personal college experiences and explain that the pathway to college includes specific steps, like daily reading, getting involved and setting goals. All participating third graders will be given their own copies of I Know I Can, to take home and read with their families.
