What did a nominator or recommender say about this teacher?

  • “She is kind and teaches well and she gives amazing book advice – that’s how I found my fave book.” – a student nomination
  • “If something isn’t working, she is ready to adapt, tweak and change to make it right.” – letter of recommendation from an instructional coach
  • “Our circulation is now three times higher than last year, a clear sign of how she has sparked students’ interest in reading. [Her] thoughtful additions [Makerspace, media lab, puzzle corner and quiet study room] have made the library a place where students want to spend time, learn and explore their interests.” “Chelsea is an exceptional educator – creative, caring, dedicated and committed to helping students succeed.” – a letter of recommendation from the Principal

What does this teacher say? “I am passionate about education and the power of books … “Goal setting, progress monitoring and celebrating student growth remain central in my role as a librarian.” “The library I envision is not static; it evolves with student needs, embraces diversity and fosters curiosity. It will not always look the same and it probably shouldn’t, since education is an ever-changing field and requires constant learning. My goal is to continue building a space where books, technology, creativity and relationships come together to make the library the heart and hub of our school community.” “Whether it’s a Makerspace creation hanging on the fridge, a craft made at the kitchen table or a recipe inspired by and paired with a book, the library becomes a bridge between school and home, inviting families to learn, create and connect alongside their children.”

What else do we know? Chelsea is the first school librarian finalist, having moved from teaching literature in the classroom to revitalizing the school library this year as librarian. The library now includes a media lab, a makerspace, a color mural, a LEGO station, a Magnetic Poetry wall, an Anxiety Bookshelf Activity, a Community Puzzle Table, a quiet room, a chess board, a Plot Hotline telephone and more. She serves on the district’s AI Guidance Committee. She received a “Your Teaching Keeps the Memories Alive” award from the Jewish Federation of Greater Rockford on Holocaust Remembrance Day 2011.
