After reviewing several excellent applications and holding some amazing interviews, Golden Apple Foundation of Rockford selected Brooke Harp, an English teacher at Holy Family Catholic School in Rockford as the 2024 recipient of the Golden Apple Don Zimmerman Scholarship. Brooke will start masters classes at Rockford University in the fall and will earn her first masters of education degree tuition-free!
Brooke has taught the entire eight years of her career at Holy Family, where she is the only literature teacher for sixth through eighth grades. She was a finalist in the Golden Apple teacher selection process in both 2022 and 2024. She coaches the school’s Scholastic Bowl team and directs its drama club. You may have seen her at Starlight Theatre this summer, too!
Brooke wrote in her application that, “if I can grow as a teacher, then my students can grow as learners.” She added, “if I could further my own education, then I could be better prepared for helping my school community.” Brooke also shared that, “It is my responsibility as an educator that I do not become complacent with my teaching methods … I want to make sure that I challenge myself, learn what I can, and be a good role model for students … I should show them that you need to take any opportunity you can to further your knowledge.”
This scholarship was founded in the memory of one of Golden Apple’s co-founder’s, the late Don Zimmerman, by Golden Apple and Don’s family. Don’s son, Brad Zimmerman says that Brooke is just the kind of teacher his father would want to give a hand up to! Brad, his mother Betty, Rockford University President Dr. Patricia Lynott, and Golden Apple Executive Director Jennifer Stark were thrilled to present the scholarship award to Brooke at Rockford University.
Congratulations, Brooke. We’ll be following your progress over the next two years!
